Shop Local Day returns to Middle Peninsula
Last November’s Shop Local Day was such a success that Chesapeake Bank and the Chamber of Commerce in Gloucester are doing it again.
The bank and the Chamber of Commerce are partnering with local businesses on Saturday, April 27, to provide another opportunity for local merchants to help shoppers discover the benefits of shopping close to home.
Julia Tyler of Cattail’s in Mathews thought the November promotion did much to highlight local businesses. "We certainly experienced an increase in business that day," she said. "I think everyone tried to shop locally to support neighborhood merchants."
"People are beginning to fully understand the many benefits and economic impact of shopping in our community," said Paula Milsted, director of marketing at Chesapeake Bank. "Not only it is more convenient, independent merchants often carry a better variety of goods and can accommodate customers in ways larger chain stores cannot. Shopping locally is also eco-friendly, as it reduces gas consumption and pollution."
Specially-designed shopping bags will be available prior to April 27 at all Chesapeake Bank locations, at the Chamber office and at participating merchants. These stores will feature discounts and special offers as part of the Shop Local promotion. "Everyone should look for ‘The Buck Stays Here’ decal in store windows to be sure to find these special deals," Milsted said.
For some local merchants, Shop Local Day turned into a month-long promotional effort that bolstered business significantly. "I think all of our local businesses made a great effort to make the day a great success, and it really paid off," said Daniel Hogge, owner of The Cake Man in Mathews. "We ran out of bags and had to get more."
Shoppers who want to get a head start in finding good deals will want to take advantage of a new feature added to the Shop Local campaign this spring. A Shop Local blog will be available online, containing a list of participating merchants and information about what will be discounted or featured in stores. Updates will be posted until April 27.
