People with diabetes can still live very good lives, two educators said during a recent diabetes education series in Gloucester.
The four-session series, the first of its type that Sentara has sponsored at its Gloucester Medical Arts building at White Marsh, was well received, Sentara spokesman Kim Van Sickel said, and other diabetes sessions are being planned.
Sharon E. Morgan, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator for Sentara, said that she expects a similar series will be offered quarterly, with the next to begin in April. Those attending must be referred by a physician.
While the sessions were principally aimed at adults with diabetes, Morgan said several people brought family members with them to learn more about how to be proactive in their approach to the disease.
Megan Cordova, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator for Sentara, said many people with diabetes can benefit by eating smaller portions. She illustrated that many fast-food restaurants offer children’s meals, which actually would be a good size portion for many adults.
