Gloucester nurse recognized by statewide awards program
Fran Bonniville, a registered nurse at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, was an honorable mention recipient of the Virginia Nurses Foundation’s inaugural "40 Under 40" awards, which recognize the top 40 nurses in Virginia under the age of 40.
Unbeknownst to Bonniville, the nurse’s father, Wes Winfree of Gloucester, nominated her for the award, and Jill Byrd, nurse manager of the Medical/Surgical unit at Walter Reed, wrote a recommendation.
Bonniville and the other winners were honored at the fourth annual Virginia Nurses Foundation Gala on Sept. 24 at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
William Machen, an emergency department nurse at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital, Tappahannock, was among five Riverside Health System award winners. Riverside nurses also received five honorable mentions, said Peter Glagola, Riverside’s director of public relations.
Bonniville, 36, works in performance improvement for Walter Reed. She checks charts and records to ensure that the medications and procedures are being delivered at the correct time and intervals, in compliance with medical reimbursement procedures.
Joe Hughes, Walter Reed’s director of quality and care management, congratulated Bonniville on being recognized by the statewide organization. He said hers is a meticulous type job, which is very important in helping the hospital achieve its patient care goals.
"Nursing is an integral part of the care we deliver at Riverside, and we are proud to have 10 of our nursing leaders recognized by the Virginia Nurses Foundation as a part of their ‘40 Under 40’ program," said Terris Kennedy, vice president and chief nursing officer for Riverside Health System.
"This is like my second home," said Bonniville, who has been at Riverside since age 16 when she started working in the kitchen part-time. After graduating from Gloucester High School, she attended Radford University for two years, and decided to return home, graduating from the Riverside School of Professional Nursing in Newport News. She worked at Walter Reed while still in school and after, holding several nursing positions.
