Dr. Wayne Reynolds of Gloucester Point, was recently recognized as one of five recipients of the Medical Society of Virginia Foundation’s 2012 Salute to Service Awards, which recognize Virginia physicians, medical students, residents and alliance members for outstanding efforts that have substantially improved patient care, both locally and abroad.

Reynolds received his award for Service to the Uninsured and Underserved.

Created by the MSV Foundation in 2004, the annual Salute to Service Awards recognize the outstanding efforts of those dedicated to creating and nurturing a caring health promotion and disease prevention environment for patients everywhere, a release stated.

A volunteer physician at the Gloucester-Mathews Free Clinic since its opening in 1998, Reynolds has served as the medical director since 2003, supervising the paid clinical team, two nurse practitioners and a physician assistant.

The clinic has grown from 2,005 patient visits in 2007 to 9,281 patient visits in 2011. Reynolds’s work enabled the clinic to serve more than 2,000 patients last year, with the majority having one or more chronic diseases, a release said.

In addition to his duties as medical director, Reynolds is the president of Project CARE, a network of volunteer physicians. More than 250 volunteer physicians are part of the network that provides services to the uninsured.

Reynolds is a Family Practitioner at Sentara Family Medicine Physicians, Gloucester.
